Windows are the eyes of a home or business, and doesn’t it make sense to install the most beautiful windows that are also energy efficient and increase the value of a home or building? Not all windows are created equally, and although some windows do cost less, they will cost you more in energy bills.

What kind of window glass does your home, business, school or building need in MN? There are several types of window glass replacement options.

The 2 most popular types of window glass are single pane and double pane glass. Features include:

Single Pane Glass – most often found in older homes and buildings; not very energy efficient. Least expensive to purchase, but more costly with energy bills in Minnesota.

Double Pane Glass – dual pane window glass provides greater insulation against the colder climates in Minnesota, and oftentimes will have argon gas infused between the panes to increase energy efficiency. Double pane window glass also insulates against outside noise better than single pane glass. Insulated double pane window glass is the preferred choice among builders in MN and is suitable for most residential and commercial buildings.

Although many homes as well as commercial storefronts use sheet glass, plate glass and rolled plate glass in larger windows, there are window glass coatings that will protect glass. Window glass coatings include low emission (low-e) glass, impact resistant, and reflective glass.

Low-Emission Glass – glass that is coated with layer of microscopic metal oxide. This type of window glass coating allows light in, but reduces the amount of heat. Windows that face east would benefit from low-e glass to reduce the transfer of heat inside a home or commercial building thus reducing the cost of cooling during the warmer months.

Impact Resistant Glass – this type of glass is coated with a glazing material that reinforces the glass. Two types of impact resistant glass are shatter-resistant and laminated. Unsure of which type of coating you need for your windows? Ask the glass professionals at Noble Glass, we can recommend the right window glass type for your home or business.

Reflective Glass – usually coated with a metal oxide reflective material to reduce heat and allow homes to be climate controlled. There are two types of reflective glass – soft coat or hard coat. Soft coat is often found between double or triple glazed windows because it’s susceptible to moisture. Hard coat is not as good as soft coat especially at night, but it doesn’t need to be sealed either.

Winters in Minnesota can be harsh and with varying temperatures glass windows will need to be replaced, why not buy the most energy efficient type to ensure you are saving money and not allowing it to seep out your windows?
